If you’re a galactic hero or villain do you really have the time to change your clothes every day? No? Not to worry!

One of the things that I took a while to pick up on while playing my various characters is what orange items do. Or purple ones. But it’s not like I even have any purple items yet… so let’s just stick to the sneaky orange ones. These are adaptive armour pieces which adapt (hence the name) to your current level. You can put a number of enhancements and modifications in them to make them stronger so that you can keep them statistically competitive with the rest of the gear you could find. They also seem to be viable over a number of levels.

Just as long as your modifications are up to date and relevant.

So, there we have it, while we all believed Obi-Wan was simply a poor hermit who couldn’t afford clothes, he was simply upgrading the modifications in his existing clothes to provide the best statistical benefits. Didn’t help much against Darth Vader but, you know, he was OP, as that’s the reasonable response to everyone who beats you in a duel. “OMFG SO OP!” Though, if you listen really closely you can hear Obi-Wan saying “GG” to Darth Vader after their duel. So, if nothing else- he was a good sport. I’m still confused as to why he didn’t respawn though…

I love the idea of adaptive armour as it’s a nice way to stay statistically relevant without having to worry that you didn’t get a decent chest armour drop again. Or that you can’t find any upgrade for your pants. It’s also a cost-effective way to spend Commendations as you buy an item now and it will last you a long time.

The crafting system also ties into this somewhere but as I’ve not levelled my Crew Skills much yet I can’t really say how much or how well. It would be quite interesting if you had crafting available to build these various components so that you didn’t need to buy the enhancements or modifications either. Just the items. Or, imagine if you got the items from the quests and built the modifications and enhancements? That really would be OP. Awesome… but so OP. Actually, no- it would just be awesome. I’d love that.

I’m slowly building up a set of adaptive items on my Jedi Guardian and so far it’s working out pretty well.

I was thinking about getting some for my companion(s) but I don’t know if that would be worth it. I find a number of drops that I can’t/don’t use so I can simply pass those on and the companions seem to remain fairly good even without constantly upgraded gear. Which brings me to another point- companions! Never spoke about them before but I’m going to change that right now!

These remind me a bit of the mercenaries you could pick up in Guild Wars in the various towns or locations you would find yourself. Except you can only have one at a time. But they are a lot more useful than the mercenaries as you can upgrade their gear, select their skills, pick ones to compliment you and such. It’s a nice touch and I appreciate it a little more having a Jedi Guardian tank as my main for the time being. As, while I can withstand a lot of damage, and I protect people, I can’t actually deal a massive amount of damage. So, I bring Kira to stab them while I get stabbed. It’s a good arrangement. I do believe there are others that even fill the healer role but I haven’t actually encountered one of those yet.

Imagine the capacity to solo engagements if that were the case. Mm. Yes. Delicious.

The best thing about having your own ship is that you can go wherever you want whenever you want to. No waiting for shuttles for you!

So, what’s a Legacy? Well, it’s a number of things. You have a surname (which you choose) that you can apply to characters or have as a kind of title, you have a family tree, you can create rivalries, you can forge alliances, and generally you can tie all of your characters together to a specific name that earns you bonuses and such. Of course, there’s no real need to use a surname or the title-like option so you can have a Legacy purely as a bonuses only sort of thing.

It also doesn’t restrict your ability to join guilds or do anything else in the game. It’s just there. Earning experience and unlocking things every so often.

It also ties into the account wide achievements system which allows you to track your progress across every aspect of the game. Your characters, regardless of faction, share the same pool of achievements and allow you to accumulate a number of achievements. As, for instance, you can unlock achievements for doing all of the Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular quests. But you can also unlock achievements for doing all of the Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor quests. These can then be seen in the achievements which is interesting as usually these things are faction specific. As in the case of World of Warcraft where Horde and Alliance achievements are separate.

However, as far as I’m aware, as none of my other characters have yet to earn the same titles automatically, any rewards for earning achievements like titles are character specific. So you can’t complete one Flashpoint and use the same title on everyone. Which, though it keeps everyone tied together also allows them to retain an individual progression too.

The achievements also hold a number of optional objectives while you’re on various planets as there are things like “defeat 250 droids” and there are more specific objectives like defeating special elite or boss characters which allows you to divert from the questing from time to time. While, again, as far as I’m aware, you don’t get anything for defeating them besides the achievement and achievement rewards- you can do something more challenging if you feel like it. Or skip it if you don’t. It’s really down to personal preference.

This bleeds over into the way that enemies are encountered through the quests as you don’t have a dozen of the same types over and over. You have strong enemies, weak enemies, elite enemies, and they all require a different approach if you are to be successful and not die repeatedly to them. Some are simply able to soak a lot of pain which allows them to deal more damage just through survival. While some have specific and highly damaging abilities which make them dangerous to fight if you’re not prepared. It’s a rather nice change to have that element of tactics even in the levelling process. Most of the time that sort of thing is reserved for group engagements. I prefer it as you get to know your class a lot better when you’re nearly dead from making a mistake.

So far I’d have to say that the class design and questing is fairly interesting. I also find that the way you go about travelling, exploring, and encountering new content is refreshing while there are some fantastic ideas for items (covered next time) which really engage you. There seems to be a lot of diversity in the content which is something I’d expect from a single player game rather than an MMO.

Not that I’m complaining!

Usually I’m not one for abbreviations but that title was getting so long you’d need a dual-monitor setup just to see it.

I’m not entirely sure of the reasons why but recently I decided to look into Star Wars: The Old Republic (again). I’ve followed the title in a very loose sense since the release and remember when it first went free to play, but, as I was never a massive fan of Star Wars (I liked the original trilogy of films), I never thought I’d actually play it. But the fact that it was free to play and an MMO and it could possibly scratch that MMO itch I’ve had in my lower back for the longest time that no amount of cat claws can reach I thought why not.

I went into it as a Preferred Status member as I bought the digital extras on the store for a colossal £2.99 which opened up many more character slots and such. I’d recommend anyone who’s going to play it on a free to play basis do the same as the investment is tiny and the benefits are fairly good.

But, yes, as you may have noticed, there are some restrictions for free to play but these are (in my opinion) fairly minor until you reach the level cap. Most of it is just restricting the amount of money and types of equipment you wear. But the currency cap is something like 350k so it’s not like you’re going to hit it too soon. While the equipment cap is for things that generally you’ll get in the end-game content which you would need to be Lvl 50-55 to access anyway. By which time if you’re still playing it and enjoying it the subscription cost is minor but opens the game up fully.

One thing that really struck me was how fun the classes were to play and how fun they were to watch. I was levelling my Jedi Knight on Typhon and ran into a Jedi Consular in the same area and the class just looked so much fun. Like, their attacks and the way they engaged enemies looked fun. It’s rare that I get that feeling about classes as I’m usually a bit more calculating when it comes to their rotations and such.

But this is refreshing as each class feels genuinely different and each is enjoyable in a particular way. I really enjoyed levelling a Trooper for a bit as it was so fun moving from place to play unloading massive cannon damage on everything, only to then switch to a Sith Inquisitor and feel a kind of mixed melee approach by using various lightning attacks and saber strikes. I think this is one of those rare cases that if you experiment a bit with each class you’ll probably find one that really suits you. I feel the Jedi Guardian really suits me as the mixture of offensive and defence but the lack of healing makes a challenging class.

I also feel the levelling approach is fairly unique but reminiscent of Mass Effect. In that you travel to various planets to level and these are like the traditional zones in other MMOs, but, in this case, you have a small area to explore on each planet (usually five or so zones) and there’s less running around and more levelling. Quests are tightly packed so you are able to collect multiple at once and not spend hours running back and forth to places you’ve been before. The holo communicator also eliminates the need to run back to one person just to get sent back to the same area you came from. These kind of mechanics are not really new but the combination of them is pretty fresh and exciting when you’ve done the run from point a to point b thing so many times.

There’s also the Legacy system (which is what this whole series of posts is about) which I will cover next time with more thoughts.
